Pros

  • Rare Heirloom Varieties: Foodocracy carries more than 24 bean and field pea varieties through the year, from Ayocote Medianoche and Flor de Mayo to tepary beans, alongside Carolina Gold rice and Tibetan purple barley.
  • Traceable, Recent Harvests: Primary Beans packages name the farm and the harvest date, and the store says its beans are fresh enough to cook without soaking in 25 to 45 minutes in a pressure cooker.
  • Strong Buyer Reviews: The store's own product reviews average 4.92 out of 5 from 691 reviews, and its Heirloom Bean + Grain Club costs $30.95 a box with pause, skip or cancel at any time.

Cons

  • Foodocracy ships only within the United States, at a flat $11.99 per shipment to the contiguous states and $25 to $50 to Alaska and Hawaii, with no PO boxes, so readers in Canada, Australia and the UK cannot order and US buyers get more value by combining several bags in one order.
  • Food cannot be returned, and claims for missing or damaged items need photos of the box, label, packing and items within 10 days of delivery, so photograph your order as you unpack it before the packaging goes out.

The Verdict

What sets Foodocracy apart is how plainly it names the small farms behind each bag of beans: Founder Lisa Riznikove has run Foodocracy since about 2019 as a woman-owned online market, legally Green Squrl, Inc., with a mailing address in Calabasas, California. It sells beans, grains, spices and pantry goods from about 30 small producers, among them Marsh Hen Mill, Ramona Farms, Boonville Barn Collective and Masienda, and in 2025 it took over Primary Beans after that brand's founder, Lesley Sykes, stepped back. Primary Beans packages print the farm and harvest date, with growers from Idaho and Washington to Puebla, Mexico, where the La Comandanta cooperative helps keep rare varieties such as Ayocote Medianoche in production. The store says its beans and grains are non-GMO and never sprayed with glyphosate, and items marked organic are USDA certified. Single bags cost $7.99 for Organic Chickpeas, $8.99 for Baby Butter Beans, $10.99 for Peruano or Organic Cannellini and $13.95 for tepary beans or Carolina Gold rice, while sets run from the $15.94 Homemade Hummus Bundle to All The Primary Beans Set at $133.89. The Heirloom Bean + Grain Club costs $30.95 a box plus shipping, monthly, every 2 months or quarterly, and prepaid gifts cost $128.82 for 3 months with shipping included. Every order ships for a flat $11.99 in the contiguous US, or $25 to $50 to Alaska and Hawaii, leaving in 3 to 4 business days and arriving in 7 to 10, mostly by USPS Ground. The reservations are worth knowing. There is no free-shipping threshold, so a single bag carries a large shipping share, and the store ships only within the US, never to PO boxes. Food cannot be returned, and damage claims need photos within 10 days. No partner farm is certified gluten- or allergen-free, and some beans grow in rotation with wheat, which matters for celiac cooks. The claimed Trustpilot profile has no reviews yet, so the 4.92 rating from 691 reviews is the store's own. Build one larger order or pick a set, and for holiday gifts allow about two weeks, since no order-by dates are published.

Heirloom Beans, Ancient Grains and Spices From Small Family Farms

Foodocracy is a woman-owned online market led by founder Lisa Riznikove; its legal name is Green Squrl, Inc., doing business as Shop Foodocracy and Primary Beans, with a mailing address in Calabasas, California and no retail store. It sells beans, grains, spices, oils and pantry goods from about 30 small producers, among them Marsh Hen Mill, Ramona Farms, Boonville Barn Collective, Burlap & Barrel and Masienda, and in 2025 it took over the Primary Beans brand when founder Lesley Sykes stepped back. Foodocracy sells and ships every order itself, so one cart and one shipping charge cover every brand.

Single bags run from $7.99 for Primary Beans Organic Chickpeas and $8.99 for Baby Butter Beans to $10.99 for Peruano and Organic Cannellini and $13.95 for Ramona Farms tepary beans and Carolina Gold rice, with Seka Hills Arbequina olive oil at $30.95. Curated sets include Not A Pinto Set at $30.97, the Bean Starter Set at $41.92 and All The Primary Beans Set at $133.89. The Heirloom Bean + Grain Club costs $30.95 a box plus shipping, and prepaid gift memberships cost $128.82 for 3 months, $257.64 for 6 and $515.28 for 12 with shipping included.

Shipping is a flat $11.99 per shipment within the contiguous US and $25 to Alaska and Hawaii for orders up to 13 pounds, $50 above that, and orders typically ship in 3 to 4 business days and arrive in 7 to 10, mostly by USPS Ground. There is no shipping to Canada, Australia, the UK, US territories or PO Box and APO addresses. Products marked organic are USDA certified, the rest are described as non-GMO and never sprayed with glyphosate, and Primary Beans packages list the farm and harvest date.

Food cannot be returned, which the store attributes to FDA and California food safety rules; missing or damaged items are refunded in full when you email photos of the box, label, packing and items within 10 days of delivery, and refunds usually post within 7 days. Club subscriptions can be paused, skipped or cancelled in the member portal, while prepaid gifts are final but transferable. Independent feedback is thin, since the claimed Trustpilot profile has no reviews, but the store's own product reviews average 4.92 out of 5 from 691 reviews.

Buyer's guide

Foodocracy: what to know before you buy

Foodocracy sells heirloom beans, grains and spices from small farms, including its own Primary Beans. Here is what bags and club boxes cost, how flat-rate shipping works, and what to know before you order.

Shipping, returns & warranty

Foodocracy charges a flat $11.99 per shipment anywhere in the contiguous US, whatever the order size, and each extra delivery address is a separate charge. Alaska and Hawaii cost $25 for orders up to 13 pounds and $50 for 14 pounds and over. Most orders ship by USPS Ground within 3 to 4 business days and arrive within 7 to 10 business days. The store cannot ship to US territories or PO Box, APO, FPO or DPO addresses, and it does not ship to Canada, Australia or the UK. No holiday order-by dates are published, so allow about two weeks for gifts.

Food cannot be returned, which the store attributes to FDA and California food safety rules, and gift cards are final. If an item is missing or damaged, email [email protected] within 10 days of delivery with your order number in the subject line and photos of the shipping box, the label showing the tracking number, every item received and the packing materials. Affected items are refunded in full, usually within 7 days. Sale items cannot be refunded, and exchanges are not offered. Non-food items can be returned unused in their original packaging within 30 days, at your own postage cost.

There is no warranty on food. Dried beans are best within 2 to 3 years of harvest, and Primary Beans packages print the harvest date so you can check.

Foodocracy product lines

Heirloom beans are the core of the shop. Primary Beans, the brand Foodocracy took over in 2025, covers varieties such as Flor de Mayo, Peruano, Baby Butter, Organic Cannellini, Organic Chickpeas, Heirloom Black Garbanzo and the Ayocote family, and each package names the farm and harvest date. Other growers include Ramona Farms for tepary beans, Marsh Hen Mill for Sea Island Red Peas, Carolina Gold rice and Jimmy Red cornmeal, Blue House Farms and Fifth Crow Farm for organic heirlooms, and Small Town Specialties for Jacob's Cattle and Good Mother Stallard beans.

Grains include Hayden Flour Mills Tibetan purple barley, Red Lakes Nation Foods wild rice, Corn Mafia hominy, Bluebird Grain Farms farro and Two Brooks Farm rice. Spices and pantry goods come from Boonville Barn Collective chiles, Burlap & Barrel, Diaspora Spice Co., Villa Jerada, Bourbon Barrel Foods, Pacific Flake sea salt, Ocean's Balance kombu and Seka Hills olive oil.

Curated sets bundle these by theme, from the Homemade Hummus Bundle to the Perfect Soup Bundle and The Tribal Table, and the Heirloom Bean + Grain Club sends 2 beans and a grain, or 3 beans, each month, every 2 months or quarterly. Items marked organic on the site are USDA certified; the store describes the rest as non-GMO and never sprayed with glyphosate.

How to choose heirloom beans

If heirloom beans are new to you, the store suggests mild, creamy varieties first: Peruano or Mayacoba, which cook like a creamier pinto, Chaparro for a classic black bean, Baby Butter Beans for speed and Flageolet for salads and braises. The Bean Starter Set at $41.92 collects beginner-friendly varieties in one order.

Large beans such as Ayocote, Christmas Lima and tepary take longest and are the ones the store suggests soaking. Most of its fresh beans need no soaking: its guide gives 25 to 45 minutes unsoaked in a pressure cooker, 1 to 3 hours on the stove and 6 to 12 hours in a slow cooker. One pound of dried beans makes about 6 cups cooked, roughly 3 cans.

Choose the Bean Only club option, 3 beans a box, if you avoid gluten, since the grains include wheat varieties. The store says no partner farm is certified gluten- or allergen-free and some beans grow in rotation with wheat, so anyone with celiac disease should ask before ordering.

Because shipping is a flat $11.99, it pays to build one larger order or choose a set rather than buying a single bag.

About this review

Is this Foodocracy review sponsored?

No. Foodocracy did not pay for this write-up, see it before publication, or have any say in the verdict. If we earn anything it is a commission after you buy, and it comes out of the merchant’s margin rather than your price.

How was the Foodocracy assessed?

By using it and by checking the claims made about it against what it actually does. Where our time with something has been limited, the review says so rather than implying more testing than happened.

What else have you reviewed in Food & Drinks?
