Pros

  • Certifications You Can Look Up: The Water Quality Association's Gold Seal directory lists the 1.8-gallon and 3-gallon systems under NSF/ANSI 42 for particulates, NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free materials.
  • Long Filter Life, Lifetime Chambers: A pair of Foundation filters is rated for up to 12 months, and the stainless steel chambers, spigots and fittings carry a lifetime warranty with no registration needed.
  • A 60-Day Trial, Even When Used: Boroux takes back new or used products within 60 days of delivery and refunds the original payment method, and US shipping is free on orders over $60.

Cons

  • Returns are not free, because Boroux deducts $16 for its prepaid label, charges up to 15% when a return is poorly packed and keeps the original shipping charge, so hold on to the box for 60 days and ask [email protected] for a return number before you send anything back.
  • The certified claims cover particulates, microplastics and lead-free materials, while the wider figures such as 99.97% and 80-plus contaminants come from Boroux's own lab test reports, so compare those reports with your local water report and remember the filters are not meant to treat microorganisms.

The Verdict

What sets Boroux apart is a Berkey-style gravity filter whose certifications you can check in a public directory: Boroux is run by James Enterprise Inc., a family business in Pueblo, Colorado that was the largest Berkey distributor until an EPA stop-sale order on Black Berkey filters in December 2022. Its Foundation carbon filters, made in the USA, use the same formulation with narrower claims, and Boroux says they are not intended to remove microorganisms. The Water Quality Association's Gold Seal directory lists the 1.8-gallon and 3-gallon systems as certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for particulate reduction, NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free materials. The larger numbers on the site, such as up to 99.97% of volatile organic compounds, come from IAPMO lab test reports rather than certification. The 3-Gallon Water Filter System costs $399 with two Foundation filters or $499 with four, and the 1.8-Gallon system $349. Replacement Foundation filters list at $159 a pair, the Proactive fluoride add-on starter kit at $139 and the Shower Filter System at $70, and in late October early Black Friday bundles ran from $340. A pair of Foundation filters is rated for up to 12 months, and the systems are HSA and FSA eligible at checkout. US shipping is free over $60, and a 3-gallon order to New York was quoted free economy shipping or $16.82 by UPS Ground. Canada, the UK and Australia are served at paid rates, quoted from $39.19, $85.76 and $145.74 for the same system, with duties and taxes collected at checkout. The reservations are the return fees and a mixed record. Returns are accepted for 60 days, new or used, but the prepaid label costs $16 from your refund and original shipping is not refunded. Trustpilot shows 3.0 out of 5 from only 14 reviews, split between five-star and one-star, with complaints about filters slowing and no replies to negative reviews, and some products cannot ship to California or Iowa. Read the published test results against your local water report, prime new filters as the guides describe, and keep the packaging until the 60 days have passed.

Certified Stainless Steel Gravity Water Filters With a 60-Day Trial

Boroux is the water filter brand of James Enterprise Inc., a family business at 1981 Aspen Circle, Pueblo, Colorado, founded by Todd Emerson in the late 1990s and now led by the second generation under CEO Parker Emerson. The company was the largest distributor of Berkey filters until an EPA stop-sale order on Black Berkey filters in December 2022, and it turned Boroux from a glass drinkware brand into a filter brand in late 2023. The range covers 1.8-gallon and 3-gallon stainless steel systems, Foundation carbon filters, a Proactive fluoride add-on, a shower filter, stands, spigots and glass drinkware.

The 3-Gallon Water Filter System costs $399 with two Foundation filters or $499 with four, and the 1.8-Gallon system $349. Replacement Foundation filters list at $159 a pair, the Proactive Fluoride Filter starter kit at $139, the Shower Filter System at $70 and the 16 oz glass water bottle at $12. In late October 2026 Boroux was running early Black Friday pricing, with bundles such as the 3-Gallon Deluxe Holiday Bundle at $420 against the store's own compare-at price of $567.

US shipping is free on orders over $60 after discounts, orders of $500 or more need a signature, and some products cannot ship to California or Iowa because of state rules on filter claims. Canada, Australia and the UK are served at paid rates with duties and taxes collected at checkout; a 3-gallon system was quoted from $39.19 to Canada, $85.76 to the UK and $145.74 to Australia. The Water Quality Association lists the systems as certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 401 and 372, and a pair of Foundation filters is rated for up to 12 months.

New or used products can be returned within 60 days of delivery with a return number from [email protected]; a prepaid label costs $16 from the refund, original shipping is not refunded and Open Box units are final sale. Systems carry a lifetime warranty on chambers and fittings, Foundation filters one year and the fluoride media six months. The independent record is mixed: Trustpilot shows 3.0 out of 5 from 14 reviews, split between five-star and one-star, with complaints about filters slowing and no replies to negative reviews, and we found no BBB profile.

Buyer's guide

Boroux: what to know before you buy

Boroux makes stainless steel gravity water filters certified by the Water Quality Association. Here is what the systems cost, what the certifications cover, and how shipping, returns and the warranty work.

Shipping, returns & warranty

US shipping is free on orders over $60 after discounts, by a carrier Boroux chooses; P.O. boxes may take longer and orders of $500 or more need a signature. Expedited shipping is extra and ships the same weekday when ordered before 1:00 p.m. Mountain Time. Some products, including the Proactive fluoride filter, cannot ship to California or Iowa because of state rules on reduction claims.

Canada, Australia and the UK are served at paid rates, with duties and taxes collected at checkout. For a 3-gallon system the checkout quoted from $39.19 to Canada, $85.76 to the UK and $145.74 to Australia on 1 November 2026, and international orders can take up to 30 days.

Returns of new or used products are accepted within 60 days of delivery. Ask [email protected] for a return number first; returns without one lose $16, a prepaid UPS label costs $16 from the refund (lower 48 states only), the floor stand $22, and poorly packed returns can cost up to 15%. Original shipping is not refunded, free items must come back, and Open Box units are final sale.

The systems' chambers, spigots and fittings carry a lifetime warranty against defects with no registration. Foundation filters are covered for one year, and the Proactive fluoride media for six months with a lifetime warranty on its stainless shell.

Boroux product lines

The core product is the Legacy gravity system in two sizes, 1.8 gallons and 3 gallons, in polished, black or white stainless steel or Sage Green. Water poured into the upper chamber runs through the Foundation carbon filters into the lower chamber, with a stainless spigot at the base and no electricity needed.

Foundation filters are activated-carbon blocks made in the USA; a pair is rated for up to 12 months, and they also fit Berkey systems. The Proactive fluoride filter threads onto each Foundation filter and hangs in the lower chamber, rated for 1,000 gallons per pair. Boroux also sells a Shower Filter rated for about three months, an Automatic Filter Primer, wood and stainless stands, a water-level spigot and glass bottles, cups and a pitcher.

How to choose a Boroux system

Boroux suggests the 3-gallon system with two filters for up to four people filling it once a day, and four filters for larger families, up to eight people, or heavy use for cooking and pets. The 1.8-gallon system suits apartments, small kitchens and RVs.

Check what you need removed. The certified claims are particulate reduction, microplastics and lead-free materials; the broader removal figures come from Boroux's published lab test reports, so compare those with your local water quality report. Fluoride needs the separate Proactive add-on. The filters are not intended to remove microorganisms, so they are made for treated tap water rather than untreated sources.

Deals & pricing

List prices are $349 for the 1.8-gallon system and $399 or $499 for the 3-gallon system with two or four filters, with replacement Foundation filters at $159 a pair. In late October 2026 Boroux was running early Black Friday pricing on bundles, and Open Box systems sell for less as final sale. Bundle compare-at prices are the store's own figures. Boroux: questions people ask

Straight answers about Boroux, then how this review was written and stays independent.

About Boroux

Is Boroux legit?

Yes. Boroux is run by James Enterprise Inc. in Pueblo, Colorado, a family company that sold gravity water filters for more than 20 years, and its systems appear in the Water Quality Association's Gold Seal directory. The record is mixed: Trustpilot shows 3.0 out of 5 from only 14 reviews, split between five-star and one-star, and we found no BBB profile. The company also publishes a phone line, 1-800-350-4170.

Is Boroux the same as Berkey?

No, but the two are related. The family behind Boroux was the largest Berkey distributor until an EPA stop-sale order on Black Berkey filters in December 2022. Boroux says its Foundation filters use the same carbon formulation with narrower claims, and they fit Berkey systems. Boroux filters are not intended to remove microorganisms, so they are made for treated tap water.

Is Boroux NSF certified?

Yes, for specific standards. The Water Quality Association lists the 1.8-gallon and 3-gallon systems as certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for particulate reduction, NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastics and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free materials. The site's broader removal figures, such as up to 99.97% of volatile organic compounds, come from IAPMO lab tests rather than certification.

What is Boroux's return policy?

Boroux accepts new or used products within 60 days of delivery. Email [email protected] for a return number first, because returns without one lose $16. A prepaid label also costs $16 from the refund, poorly packed returns can cost up to 15%, original shipping is not refunded and Open Box units are final sale. Refunds go to the original payment method.

Does Boroux ship to Canada, Australia or the UK?

Yes, at paid rates. For a 3-gallon system the checkout quoted from $39.19 to Canada, $85.76 to the UK and $145.74 to Australia on 1 November 2026, with duties and taxes collected at checkout. International orders can take up to 30 days. US orders over $60 ship free, and some products cannot ship to California or Iowa.

What warranty does Boroux offer?

The 1.8-gallon and 3-gallon systems, including chambers, spigots, washers, hole plugs and wingnuts, have a lifetime warranty against defects with no registration; contact customer service with your order number. Foundation filters are covered for one year, and the Proactive fluoride filter's media for six months with a lifetime warranty on its stainless shell.

About this review

Is this Boroux review sponsored?

No. Boroux did not pay for this write-up, see it before publication, or have any say in the verdict. If we earn anything it is a commission after you buy, and it comes out of the merchant’s margin rather than your price.

How was the Boroux assessed?

By using it and by checking the claims made about it against what it actually does. Where our time with something has been limited, the review says so rather than implying more testing than happened.

What else have you reviewed in Home & Garden?

Everything in Home & Garden sits in the review library, where you can filter by budget and sort by rating, price or how recently it landed.

Do you update reviews after publishing?

Yes — when a product changes, when a price moves for good, or when we get something wrong. Corrections are made on the piece itself with a note saying what changed.
