Pros
- Made Where the Cocoa Grows: Beyond Good roasts, grinds and molds its bars at its own factory in Antananarivo, Madagascar, which employs over 100 people, buying Madagascar cocoa directly from farmers and Ugandan cocoa through a cooperative.
- Certified and Recognized Sourcing: Most bars are USDA Organic and SIKS Kosher, the Direct Trade program is certified by Quality Certification Services, and the 2025 Chocolate Scorecard gave Beyond Good the top small-company score of 94% and a Good Egg Award.
- Everyday Prices for Craft Chocolate: Single bars cost $5.50 and Microbatch bars $7.50, a 12-bar case is $60, and standard shipping is a $5 flat rate or free on orders of $40 or more.
Cons
- Chocolate ships only to the lower 48 states and DC, with vanilla going to all 50 states and nothing to Canada, Australia, the UK or military addresses, so readers outside the contiguous US will need a local stockist, while shoppers in Alaska or Hawaii can still order the vanilla.
- Food orders cannot be returned and warm-weather orders ship on ice at a higher flat rate the store does not publish, so order chocolate gifts in cooler months where you can and email [email protected] promptly if a bar arrives damaged, since the company says it will refund or replace an order that disappoints.
The Verdict
What sets Beyond Good apart is that its chocolate is made at origin, in the company's own factory in Madagascar: Founded in 2008 by two former Peace Corps volunteers and known as Madécasse until 2019, Beyond Good runs the AMCHO factory in Antananarivo, which its FAQ says employs over 100 people and handles every step from sorting and roasting to conching, tempering and molding. Madagascar cocoa, a Criollo with a bright, red-fruit taste, is bought directly from farmers, while Ugandan Trinitario, richer and more classically chocolatey, comes through a farmer cooperative and is shipped to the same factory. Because the beans travel only a short way, the company manages fermentation and drying to its own specification, which it credits for the fruit-forward taste. The company works with more than 1,000 farmers, its Direct Trade program is certified by Quality Certification Services, most bars are USDA Organic and all chocolate is Kosher, and the 2025 Chocolate Scorecard ranked it first among small companies with a score of 94%. The prices undercut most craft bars. Pure Dark 70%, 80% and 92%, Sea Salt, Hazelnut, Salted Caramel and the other single bars cost $5.50 each or $60 for a case of 12, the slower-conched Microbatch bars $7.50, and the three-bar Pure Dark collection $15.50. The vanilla line runs from $10 for 2 oz of extract to $20 for Pure Ground Vanilla, which won a 2022 Cook's Country tasting, and the beans come from 199 farmers in the SAVA region. Shipping is a $5 flat rate or free on orders of $40 or more, sent by UPS Ground, with up to 5 business days of processing and up to 10 business days from order to arrival. The limits are practical ones. Chocolate ships only to the lower 48 states and DC, food cannot be returned (the company promises a refund or replacement if you are unhappy), and summer orders travel on ice at a higher, unpublished flat rate. Every bar carries a may-contain warning for tree nuts, milk and sesame, and the Salted Caramel bar contains dairy. Order holiday gifts early, buy the case of 12 for the best per-bar price, and start with the Pure Dark 70% to taste what Madagascar cocoa is like.
Bean-to-Bar Dark Chocolate and Vanilla Made at Origin in Madagascar
Beyond Good is a chocolate and vanilla company founded in 2008 by two former Peace Corps volunteers and known as Madécasse until its rename in late 2019; founder Tim McCollum runs it as CEO from Brooklyn, New York. Its bars are made at its own AMCHO (American Malagasy Chocolate) factory in Antananarivo, Madagascar, from cocoa bought directly from Madagascar farmers and through a farmer cooperative in Uganda, and its vanilla comes from 199 farmers in Madagascar's SAVA region. The range covers single-origin dark bars from 60% to 100% cocoa, Microbatch bars, baking melts, vanilla beans, ground vanilla and extract, which are also sold at Whole Foods, Target, Sprouts and Kroger.
Single bars such as Pure Dark 70%, 80% and 92%, Sea Salt 63%, 73% Hazelnut, 73% Salted Caramel, Orange Zest 73% and 100% Cocoa with Dates & Sesame cost $5.50, or $60 for a case of 12. Microbatch bars (Candied Ginger, Sea Salt & Nibs, Rum Raisins and Vanilla Bean) are $7.50 or $80 for 12, the Microbatch Collection is $30, the Pure Dark Chocolate Bar Collection $15.50 and 60%, 70% or 92% chocolate melts $13 a bag. Vanilla extract runs from $10 for 2 oz to $40 for 16 oz, Pure Ground Vanilla is $20, and the Baker's Bundle is $85.
Standard shipping is a $5 flat rate, free on orders of $40 or more, by UPS Ground outside summer; in warmer months chocolate ships on ice in insulated packaging at a higher flat rate. Allow up to 5 business days for processing and up to 10 business days from order to arrival; chocolate goes only to the lower 48 states and DC, vanilla to all 50 states, and nothing ships to Canada, Australia, the UK or military bases. The FAQ says most bars are USDA Organic (a few inclusions are not), all chocolate and vanilla is Kosher through SIKS, Direct Trade is certified by Quality Certification Services, and products are tested by Eurofins for heavy metals, though the results are not published.
Because it sells food, Beyond Good accepts no returns, but it says it will refund or replace an order that disappoints, and requests go to [email protected]. Every bar carries a may-contain warning for tree nuts, milk and sesame, and the 73% Salted Caramel contains dairy. Beyond Good has no Trustpilot profile, but the 2025 Chocolate Scorecard gave it the highest small-company score (94%) and a Good Egg Award, and Cook's Country named its Pure Ground Vanilla the winner of a 2022 ground-vanilla tasting.
Beyond Good: what to know before you buy
Beyond Good makes single-origin dark chocolate and Madagascar vanilla at its own factory in Madagascar. Here is how the bars differ, what they cost, and how shipping and returns work before you order.
Shipping, returns & warranty
Standard shipping is a $5 flat rate and free on orders of $40 or more; a 1 November 2026 checkout estimate confirmed both. Orders take up to 5 business days to process and up to 10 business days from order to arrival, depending on distance from Brooklyn, NY. Outside summer, parcels go by UPS Ground; in warmer months chocolate ships on ice in insulated packaging at a higher flat rate, which the store does not list in advance.
Chocolate ships only to the lower 48 states and DC, while vanilla ships to all 50 states. There is no international shipping and no shipping to military bases, and gift sets cannot be customized. No 2026 holiday order-by date is published, so order gifts in the first half of December or earlier.
As a food seller, Beyond Good accepts no returns, and there is no product warranty. The policy says it will refund or replace an order that does not make you happy; write to [email protected] with your order number and photos if a bar arrives damaged or bloomed.
Beyond Good product lines
Madagascar bars use Criollo cocoa and taste bright and fruity, with red fruit and citrus notes: Pure Dark 70%, 80% and 92%, Sea Salt 63%, Vanilla Bean and Vanilla Almond. Uganda bars use Trinitario cocoa and taste richer and more classically chocolatey: Sea Salt 85%, 73% Hazelnut, 73% Salted Caramel and Orange Zest 73%. The 100% Cocoa with Dates & Sesame is sweetened only with dates.
Microbatch bars are made in small numbered batches with a conche of at least 24 hours: 72% Candied Ginger, 72% Sea Salt & Nibs, 72% Vanilla Bean and 70% Rum Raisins. Baking melts come in 60% (Uganda), 70% and 92% (Madagascar).
The vanilla line covers whole Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans, Pure Ground Vanilla (one ingredient, ground whole beans) and pure vanilla extract in 2, 4, 8 and 16 oz bottles, all USDA Organic and Kosher.
How to choose a bar
If you are new to the brand, start with Pure Dark 70%, the company's own suggested entry point to Madagascar cocoa, then try 73% Hazelnut or Salted Caramel for the Uganda style. Lovers of very dark chocolate can go to 92% or the 100% bar with dates, which has no added sugar.
For diets: the dark bars are dairy-free and vegan except the 73% Salted Caramel, which uses dairy caramel, and the Pure Dark bars and the 100% bar contain no lecithin. Everything is made on shared equipment and carries a may-contain warning for tree nuts, milk and sesame, so it is not suitable for severe allergies.
For gifts, the Four Flavor Collection ($20), the Pure Dark Chocolate Bar Collection ($15.50) and the Microbatch Collection ($30) are ready-made, and bakers get the most from the $85 Baker's Bundle of melts, extract and ground vanilla.
Deals & pricing
Single bars cost $5.50, so the best per-bar price comes from a case: 12 bars for $60 works out to $5 a bar, and Microbatch cases are $80 for 12. Orders of $40 or more ship free, which a case passes on its own.

Beyond Good: questions people ask
Straight answers about Beyond Good, then how this review was written and stays independent.
About Beyond Good
Is Beyond Good chocolate legit?
Yes. Beyond Good, known as Madécasse until 2019, was founded in 2008 and makes its chocolate at its own factory in Antananarivo, Madagascar, with an office in Brooklyn, NY. Its bars sell at Whole Foods, Target, Sprouts and Kroger, the 2025 Chocolate Scorecard ranked it first among small companies with 94%, and Cook's Country named its Pure Ground Vanilla a tasting winner in 2022. It has no Trustpilot profile.
Where is Beyond Good chocolate made?
In Madagascar. The company operates the AMCHO factory in Antananarivo, which its FAQ says employs over 100 people. Madagascar cocoa is bought directly from farmers, and Ugandan cocoa is bought through a farmer cooperative and shipped to the same factory. Vanilla beans and ground vanilla are prepared in Madagascar's SAVA region, while the extract is produced at a US facility from its beans.
Is Beyond Good chocolate organic and fair trade?
Most bars are certified USDA Organic, though a few with inclusions are not, and all Beyond Good vanilla is USDA Organic. The chocolate is not Fair Trade certified: the company uses its own Direct Trade model, buying directly from Madagascar farmers and through a Ugandan cooperative, and its FAQ says that program is certified by Quality Certification Services. All chocolate is Kosher through SIKS.
Does Beyond Good chocolate contain heavy metals?
Like all chocolate, cocoa naturally carries traces of cadmium and lead. Beyond Good says it tests its products regularly through Eurofins, an independent laboratory, and that they comply with FDA and California Prop 65 standards, though it does not publish the results. It says beans are dried on raised beds away from industrial areas to limit lead from dust.
Does Beyond Good ship to Canada, Australia or the UK?
No. Beyond Good ships chocolate only to the lower 48 US states and DC, and vanilla to all 50 states. It does not ship internationally or to military bases. Shipping is a $5 flat rate, free on orders of $40 or more.
What is the Beyond Good return policy?
Because it sells food, Beyond Good does not accept returns. Its policy says it will refund or replace an order you are not happy with, so email [email protected] with your order details and a description of the problem.
About this review

No. Beyond Good did not pay for this write-up, see it before publication, or have any say in the verdict. If we earn anything it is a commission after you buy, and it comes out of the merchant’s margin rather than your price.
How was the Beyond Good assessed?
By using it and by checking the claims made about it against what it actually does. Where our time with something has been limited, the review says so rather than implying more testing than happened.
