Questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the price by 1 plus the rate. At 8.25%, $100 × 1.0825 = $108.25, so the tax is $8.25.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100. Taking 8.25% off the total would give the wrong answer, because the tax was worked out on the smaller pre-tax price.

How do I find the tax rate from a receipt?

Divide the total by the pre-tax price, subtract 1 and multiply by 100. $108.25 ÷ $100 = 1.0825, so the rate is 8.25%.

Does it work for GST, HST or VAT?

Yes. The math is the same for any tax added as a percentage of the price, such as Canada’s 5% GST, Ontario’s 13% HST or Australia’s 10% GST. Australian shelf prices usually include GST, so use Remove to see the tax.
