Pros

  • Parents Approve Every App And Contact: Only safelisted numbers can call or text, apps are added one at a time from a vetted library, and Modes set what works at which time of day.
  • Thirty Days, Returns Paid Both Ways: Returns run 30 days from receipt on a prepaid label with no restocking fee, and annual subscriptions are refundable inside that window too.
  • Three Handsets And A Watch: The Genesis 4 is $119, the Slim 6 $199 and the Plus 6 $299, with the Pinwheel Watch at $159 and a screenless home phone alongside them.

Cons

  • The subscription is what gives the child access to the phone rather than just the parent portal, so budget $17.99 a month on your own carrier, or $29.99 with Pinwheel's service, on top of the handset.
  • Parents can read message content including deleted texts, which suits a younger child better than a teenager — worth agreeing openly with an older child before the phone is handed over.

The Verdict

What sets Pinwheel apart is a phone where the safe setup is the default rather than something a parent has to assemble from settings: Pinwheel is operated by Firepit, Inc. from Austin, Texas, founded in 2019 by chief executive Dane Witbeck, and reachable on (888) 903-7977 with live support from 7am to 9pm Central daily. The company does not build handsets: it ships established Android phones with the Pinwheel OS pre-installed, and names them openly — the Genesis series on BLU, the Slim on Motorola, the Plus on Samsung Galaxy and a Pixel option on Google hardware. What you are buying is the software. Only contacts on a parent-managed safelist can call or text, apps are added individually from a vetted library with no social media or ad-driven games, Modes schedule which apps and contacts work at which times, and location sharing includes arrival and departure alerts for set places. There is no web browser by default, though a parent can add one from Google Play. PinwheelGPT gives the child a filtered AI assistant with 20 conversations a month free and unlimited at $5.99. Hardware runs $119 for the Genesis 4, $199 for the Slim 6, $299 for the Plus 6 and $159 for the Pinwheel Watch. Service is the other half: the Caregiver Portal on your own carrier is $17.99 a month or $174.99 a year, and Pinwheel Wireless with unlimited talk and text and 5GB of data is $29.99 a month or $284.99 a year, with watch service at $14.99 a month. Carrier fit varies by model — the Genesis 4 works on T-Mobile and AT&T but not Verizon and has no 5G, while the Slim 6 and Plus 6 are listed as compatible with all major carriers. The reservations are worth reading before ordering. The parental monitoring is thorough, and that is the point: message content and images are visible to the parent, deleted texts still show, and the privacy policy lists text messages, images, GPS location and PinwheelGPT conversation history among the data collected, kept for 12 months. Pinwheel states it does not sell or share personal information as the California Privacy Rights Act defines it, and describes a parental-consent model consistent with COPPA, but holds no independent kidSAFE or Privo certification that we could verify. No standard warranty length is published, with cover offered as a paid third-party plan instead. Trustpilot reads 3.7 across 805 reviews on a claimed profile, with slow support and hardware faults the recurring notes. Pick the model by carrier, agree the rules with your child, and Pinwheel does the hard part of a first phone for you.

Kids' and Teens' Phones on a Locked-Down Android

Pinwheel is the trading name of Firepit, Inc., operating from 1401 Lavaca Street, PMB 40573, Austin, Texas 78701, on (888) 903-7977 with support from 7am to 9pm Central daily. It was founded in 2019 by chief executive and co-founder Dane Witbeck. Pinwheel does not manufacture hardware: it ships third-party Android handsets with the Pinwheel OS pre-installed, and its own FAQ names the base devices — the Genesis 3 on a BLU G64, the Slim 6 on a Moto G Play 2024, the Plus 5 on a Samsung Galaxy A16 and a Pixel option on the Google Pixel 8A. The company placed at 212 on the 2024 Inc. 5000 and returned to the list in 2026.

Handsets are $119 for the Genesis 4 with a 6.7-inch HD+ display, dual 50MP cameras and a 5000mAh battery; $199 for the Slim 6 with a 6.5-inch HD+ display, 50MP Quad Pixel camera and 64GB expandable to 1TB; and $299 for the Plus 6 with a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, a 50MP main camera with 5MP ultrawide and 2MP macro, 128GB expandable to 1TB and fingerprint and face unlock. The Pinwheel Watch is $159 with a 1.95-inch AMOLED touchscreen and front and rear cameras. Subscriptions are $17.99 a month or $174.99 a year for the Caregiver Portal on your own carrier, $29.99 a month or $284.99 a year for Pinwheel Wireless with unlimited talk and text and 5GB of data, and $14.99 a month for watch service; PinwheelGPT is free to 20 conversations a month and $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year unlimited.

Parental controls cover a safelist restricting which contacts can make or receive calls and texts, app approval from a vetted Pinwheel App Library described as excluding social media, addictive games and ad-driven apps, Modes that make specific apps and contacts available by time of day with app time limits, and location with arrival and departure alerts for set destinations. Message review is explicit: parents can read texts without taking the phone, deleted texts still appear, and image sending and receiving can be limited. No web browser is installed by default, though a parent can add one from the Google Play Store. The child has no open app store. Carrier compatibility varies by model: the Genesis 4 works on T-Mobile and AT&T but explicitly not Verizon and has no 5G, while the Slim 6 is listed as compatible with all major carriers and the Plus 6 with all major carriers including 5G; the Pinwheel Watch runs only on Pinwheel Wireless, is not compatible with any eSIM and has not been tested on other carriers.

Returns run 30 days from receipt with a prepaid label issued after approval and no restocking fee, with the device required in excellent condition with original packaging; cellular subscriptions billed by carriers, used SIM cards, expedited shipping fees and monthly subscriptions already billed are not refundable, and annual subscriptions are refundable within 30 days of purchase once the device is returned. Subscriptions renew automatically and cancel through the Caregiver Portal, with access retained to the end of the paid period. No standard manufacturer warranty length is published; cover is offered through a paid third-party plan. The privacy policy lists text messages and images, call and message metadata, app usage, GPS location and PinwheelGPT conversation history among data collected, retained for 12 months, and states the company does not sell or share personal information as defined under the California Privacy Rights Act. Trustpilot shows 3.7 across 805 reviews on a profile claimed in October 2020.

About this review

How this was written, who paid for what, and how the verdict stays independent.

Is this Pinwheel review sponsored?

No. Pinwheel did not pay for this write-up, see it before publication, or have any say in the verdict. If we earn anything it is a commission after you buy, and it comes out of the merchant’s margin rather than your price.

How was the Pinwheel assessed?

By using it and by checking the claims made about it against what it actually does. Where our time with something has been limited, the review says so rather than implying more testing than happened.

What else have you reviewed in Tech?

Everything in Tech sits in the review library, where you can filter by budget and sort by rating, price or how recently it landed.

Do you update reviews after publishing?

Yes — when a product changes, when a price moves for good, or when we get something wrong. Corrections are made on the piece itself with a note saying what changed.
