Questions

How do I calculate electricity cost?

Watts × hours used ÷ 1,000 gives kilowatt-hours (kWh); multiply that by your rate. A 1,500 W heater used for 4 hours uses 6 kWh, which costs $1.02 at $0.17 per kWh.

Where do I find my electricity rate?

On your electricity bill, as the price per kWh. If your plan has several charges, divide the total bill by the kWh used for an all-in rate.

How do I find an appliance’s wattage?

Check the label on the back or bottom, or the manual. If it only lists amps, multiply by the voltage: 120 V in the US and Canada, 230 V in Australia.
