Questions

How is TDEE calculated?

Resting energy (BMR) comes from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation: 10 × weight in kg + 6.25 × height in cm − 5 × age, then + 5 for men or − 161 for women (Mifflin et al., 1990). It is multiplied by an activity factor from 1.2 (sedentary) to 1.9 (extra active).

How accurate is it?

It is an estimate. Equations like this can be off by a few hundred calories for an individual, and activity factors are rough. Track your weight for a few weeks and adjust.

How many calories should I cut to lose weight?

Mayo Clinic says that cutting about 500 calories a day may lose about ½ to 1 pound a week. The calculator never shows less than 1,200 kcal a day for women or 1,500 for men, the floors Harvard Health gives for eating without medical supervision.

Who should not use this calculator?

Children and teens, and anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a health condition. A doctor or registered dietitian can work out what you need.
