Questions
Why will my barcode not scan?
Barcodes need sharp, even light. Move back a little so the whole code fits inside the frame, avoid glare, and turn on the torch if your phone offers it. Very small codes read better from a photo taken close up in the Image tab.
What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
UPC-A is the 12-digit retail barcode used in the US and Canada; EAN-13 is the 13-digit version used elsewhere. A UPC-A number is the same as an EAN-13 with a leading zero, and both are issued by GS1.
Which codes can it read?
QR and Micro QR, Data Matrix, Aztec and PDF417, plus the common barcodes: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF and Codabar. Wi-Fi codes, contacts (vCard and MECARD), calendar events, email, phone, SMS and map locations are recognised and laid out for you.
Why does the camera not start?
Your browser asks for permission the first time. If you chose Block, allow the camera in the site settings (the icon to the left of the address, or “aA” → Website Settings on iPhone) and press Start camera again. If another app is using the camera, close it first. You can always use the Image tab instead.
Is the camera video or my image uploaded?
No. The camera picture and any image you add are read by a decoder that runs inside your browser (ZXing compiled to WebAssembly). Nothing is recorded, stored on a server or sent anywhere. After the page loads it even works offline.
