Scores use the Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch–Kincaid formulas for English. Syllables are estimated from spelling, so results can differ slightly from other tools.

    How to use it

    1. Paste your text, or open a .txt, .md or .pdf file.
    2. Read the scores and what they mean.
    3. Use Jump to on long sentences and hints to edit in place.

    Questions

    Which formulas does it use?

Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words), from Rudolf Flesch (1948). Flesch–Kincaid Grade = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59, from Kincaid and colleagues for the US Navy (1975). Syllables are counted with an English spelling rule, so expect small differences from other tools.

What score should I aim for?

For the general public, aim for a Reading Ease of 60 or more (about US grade 8–9). Plain-language guidance from GOV.UK and plainlanguage.gov recommends short sentences, around 15–20 words on average.

How reliable are the passive voice and adverb hints?

They are simple pattern checks, so treat them as prompts, not rules. Passive voice is flagged when a form of “to be” is followed by a past participle; adverbs are words ending in -ly, minus a list of common exceptions.

    Is my text uploaded?

No. Scoring runs in your browser, and files you open are read on your device.

Are my files uploaded to your servers?

No. The tool runs entirely inside your browser — your files are processed on your own device and never sent to In-Right or anyone else. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
