Pros

  • Guest-Only Thermal Pools: The hotel keeps its two thermal hot-spring areas for overnight guests, adds two thermal jacuzzis and a sauna, and gives 13 of its 66 rooms a private thermal plunge pool.
  • A Strong Guest Record: Volcano Lodge holds 4.5 out of 5 from about 4,470 Tripadvisor reviews, 8.9 out of 10 from 1,625 Booking.com reviews and 9.4 from about 1,000 Hotels.com reviews.
  • Rooted in La Fortuna Since 1999: The Castro Miranda brothers opened it with 20 rooms in May 1999, and the hotel says it now employs 107 people directly, most of them from La Fortuna and surrounding communities.

Cons

  • Direct bookings are charged in full when you reserve, the 20% deposit is never refunded, and cancelling 14 days or less before arrival returns nothing, with a 100% penalty inside 60 days for Easter and Christmas to New Year stays, so book direct only once your dates are firm.
  • Only 13 of the 66 rooms have a private thermal pool, and reviews on Tripadvisor and Oyster mention dated decor, thin walls and traffic noise in the lobby, so read recent reviews and choose a Thermal Superior room or Junior Suite if a private soak is the point of the trip.

The Verdict

What sets Volcano Lodge apart is thermal water kept for its own guests at a mid-range price near La Fortuna: Volcano Lodge, Hotel & Thermal Experience sits in La Palma, about 7 km west of La Fortuna at the foot of Arenal Volcano. The Castro Miranda brothers opened it with 20 rooms in May 1999 and added thermal water in 2013. Its 66 rooms now share two cold-water pools, two thermal areas (one with the Chonete swim-up bar, open until 9 p.m.), two thermal jacuzzis and a sauna, and the hotel reserves its hot springs for overnight guests. Nine Thermal Superior rooms and four Junior Suites add a private plunge pool of naturally heated water. A July 2026 Global Trip Diaries guide put a standard room at around $150 a night and a private-pool room near $250, against roughly $640 at Tabacón and $730 at Nayara Springs. Rates on the hotel's own booking engine are in US dollars across three plans: Members (free sign-up), Seasonal and Rack. Checked on 26 October 2026 for two adults, a Superior room with two double beds cost $110, $116 or $222 for the night of 27 October, a Thermal Superior $152 to $354 and a Junior Suite $236 to $496. For 17 to 19 November the same Superior room ran $253 to $531 a night, and 22 to 24 February 2027 showed Rack rates only, from $385. The engine says rates exclude Costa Rica's 13% sales tax, so $116 becomes about $130. Seasonal and Rack rates include breakfast at the 120-seat Sura Bar & Bistro, while lunch, dinner, spa treatments and tours cost extra. Hotels.com puts the drive from San José's airport at about 173 minutes, and the hotel's airport shuttle costs extra. The main reservations are the booking terms and the room quality. Direct bookings are charged in full, the 20% deposit is kept on any cancellation, cancelling 15 to 29 days out returns 50%, and nothing comes back within 14 days, for no-shows or for early departures; Easter and December 19 to January 8 carry a 100% penalty inside 60 days. Tripadvisor's 4.5 from about 4,470 reviews and Booking.com's 8.9 from 1,625 are strong, but reviewers mention dated decor, slow restaurant service and thin walls, and the 53 standard Superior rooms have no private pool. The engine also showed no rooms at all for January 12 to 14 or February 16 to 18, 2027. Book early, pick a private-pool room if quiet matters, and confirm the total with tax before you pay.

Guest-Only Thermal Pools and Private Plunge-Pool Rooms at Arenal Volcano

Volcano Lodge, Hotel & Thermal Experience is a 66-room hotel in La Palma de La Fortuna, San Carlos, about 7 km west of La Fortuna town at the foot of Arenal Volcano. The Castro Miranda brothers opened it with 20 rooms in May 1999, added thermal water in 2013 under the name Volcano Lodge & Springs and adopted the current name in 2018. The website names no company, but Costa Rica's occupational health council lists the employer for this workplace as Inversiones Turísticas La Palma de La Fortuna H.C.M. S.A. (ID 3-101-197235). The rooms are 53 Superior, 9 Thermal Superior and 4 Junior Suites, and the hotel says it employs 107 people.

The hotel's booking engine quotes US dollars before Costa Rica's 13% sales tax, under Members (free sign-up), Seasonal and Rack plans. For two adults on 27 October 2026, a Superior Room with two double beds was $110, $116 or $222 a night, a Thermal Superior with two double beds $152 to $354 and a Junior Suite $236 to $496. For 17 to 19 November the same Superior room was $253 to $531 a night, and for 22 to 24 February 2027 only Rack rates showed, from $385 for a Superior and $545 for a Junior Suite. Seasonal and Rack rates include breakfast, but the Seasonal description also says taxes are included, which conflicts with the engine's tax note, so check the summary total.

Every room has a private terrace, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a coffee maker and a mini-fridge, and Hotels.com lists Superior rooms at 452 sq ft and Junior Suites at 581 sq ft. Thermal Superior rooms and Junior Suites add a private plunge pool of naturally heated water, while all guests share two cold-water pools, two thermal areas (one with a swim-up bar), two thermal jacuzzis, a sauna, a spa, the Sura Bar & Bistro, free Wi-Fi and free parking. The hotel's directions from San José follow routes 1, 702 and 142, about 173 minutes from Juan Santamaría airport by Hotels.com's estimate, and from Liberia routes 1 and 142, with an airport shuttle available for a fee.

Direct bookings are charged in full by card at reservation and appear on statements as Volcano Lodge Hotel; written cancellations 30 days or more out refund 80%, 15 to 29 days 50%, and 14 days or less nothing, with a 100% penalty inside 60 days for Easter and December 19 to January 8. Booking.com and Hotels.com list a refundable US$100 damage deposit taken on arrival, and pets are not allowed. Tripadvisor rates the hotel 4.5 out of 5 from 4,469 reviews (21st of 65 La Fortuna hotels), Booking.com 8.9 from 1,625 and Hotels.com 9.4 from about 1,000. Complaints that recur in reviews are dated decor, slow restaurant service and thin walls, and one August 2026 reviewer said a cancellation request was refused.

Buyer's guide

Volcano Lodge: what to know before you buy

Volcano Lodge is a 66-room hot-springs hotel near Arenal Volcano, open since 1999. Here is what rooms cost, which ones have a private thermal pool, and how its strict cancellation terms work before you book.

Booking, payment & cancellations

Book on volcanolodge.com: its Book Now button opens the hotel's own booking engine, which quotes prices in US dollars. Travelers from the US, Canada, Australia and the UK all pay the same way, by credit card in US dollars, and a non-US card is converted by its issuer. The terms say the full amount is charged when you confirm and appears on your statement as Volcano Lodge Hotel. US callers can use the toll-free line 1-800-649-5913; others can call +506 2479 2800 or message the hotel on WhatsApp at +506 2479-2801.

Cancellations must be made in writing, by email to [email protected] or by fax. The terms refund 80% when you cancel 30 days or more before arrival (the 20% deposit is not refundable), 50% at 15 to 29 days, and nothing at 14 days or less. No-shows, late arrivals and early departures get no refund for unused nights. Easter (listed as March 21 to 26) and Christmas to New Year (December 19 to January 8) cancellations made less than 60 days out carry a 100% penalty, and December 19 to January 8 has a two-night minimum.

At check-in, bring the card used to pay and a photo ID; the hotel keeps a copy of the ID and guests wear an identification bracelet. Booking.com and Hotels.com list a refundable US$100 damage deposit taken by card on arrival. Pets are not allowed, and the booking engine charges the adult price for children older than 11.

Volcano Lodge rooms and thermal pools

Superior rooms (53 of the 66) have a king bed or two full beds, a private terrace with volcano or garden views, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a coffee maker with Costa Rican coffee and a mini-fridge. Hotels.com lists them at 452 sq ft.

Thermal Superior rooms (9) add a private hot-springs plunge pool with chaise lounges on the terrace, with the same bed choices. Junior Suites (4) are the largest rooms, 581 sq ft on Hotels.com, with an orthopedic mattress and a private thermal pool. Rooms with two beds sleep up to four; king rooms sleep two.

Every guest can use the two cold-water free-form pools, the two thermal areas (one with the Chonete Thermal Sport Bar, a swim-up bar open until 9 p.m.), two thermal jacuzzis, one of them covered, and the sauna. The hotel says the thermal areas are reserved for its guests, and Hotels.com lists them as open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. A July 2026 travel blog notes the thermal water is held in treated pools rather than flowing naturally.

Sura Bar & Bistro, an open-air restaurant seating 120, serves breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. plus lunch and dinner, and room service runs from noon to 9 p.m. The spa offers treatments of 45 to 90 minutes, and the hotel books local tours such as the Arenal hanging bridges, rafting, canyoneering and canopy tours.

How to choose a room and dates

Choose a standard Superior room if you will spend most days on tours and only want the shared thermal pools in the evening. Choose a Thermal Superior room or Junior Suite if a private soak is the reason for the trip: there are only 13 of them, and on 26 October 2026 the Thermal Superior king room and the Junior Suite king room were already unavailable for the next night.

Plan around the season. Kayak's data for the past 12 months puts the cheapest month at June, averaging $163 a night, and the most expensive at March, averaging $375. On the hotel's booking engine, 12 to 14 January and 16 to 18 February 2027 already showed no availability in any room type, so book high-season dates early.

Getting there: the hotel is about 7 km west of La Fortuna town. Its directions from San José follow routes 1, 702 and 142, and from Liberia routes 1 and 142. Hotels.com estimates about 173 minutes by car from Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) and 15 to 24 minutes from La Fortuna's FON-Arenal airport. Parking is free, and the hotel runs an airport shuttle for an extra charge.

Deals & pricing

The hotel's booking engine shows three rate plans. Members is the lowest, 5% under Seasonal wherever both were shown, and needs a free account; Seasonal includes buffet breakfast; Rack is the full price with breakfast. Depending on the date and rate, direct bookings add small extras such as a complimentary drink or 10% off spa services, once per stay.

Prices move a lot with demand. On 26 October 2026, a Superior room with two double beds was $116 a night on the Seasonal rate for 27 October but $266 a night for 17 to 19 November, both before 13% sales tax. Add the tax before you compare the hotel's price with a travel site's total.

Volcano Lodge: questions people ask

Straight answers about Volcano Lodge, then how this review was written and stays independent.

Is Volcano Lodge legit?

Yes. Volcano Lodge, Hotel & Thermal Experience has operated about 7 km west of La Fortuna, Costa Rica, since the Castro Miranda brothers opened it in May 1999. It has 66 rooms and holds 4.5 out of 5 from about 4,470 Tripadvisor reviews, 8.9 from 1,625 Booking.com reviews and 9.4 from about 1,000 Hotels.com reviews. The official site is volcanolodge.com, whose Book Now button opens the hotel's own booking engine; some third-party booking sites use the hotel's name in their web address.

What is Volcano Lodge's cancellation policy?

Direct bookings are paid in full at reservation. The hotel's terms refund 80% for cancellations 30 days or more before arrival (the 20% deposit is not refundable), 50% at 15 to 29 days, and nothing at 14 days or less, for no-shows or for early departures. Cancelling an Easter or December 19 to January 8 stay less than 60 days out costs 100%. Cancellations must be in writing, by email to [email protected] or by fax.

Is Volcano Lodge all-inclusive?

No. The hotel's Seasonal and Rack rates include breakfast, served from 7 to 10 a.m. at Sura Bar & Bistro, and every guest can use the thermal pools. Lunch, dinner, drinks, spa treatments and tours cost extra, and the dining page mentions meal plans with some lodging packages. The booking engine quotes rates before Costa Rica's 13% sales tax, so check the total on the summary page before you pay.

Can you visit Volcano Lodge's hot springs with a day pass?

The hotel describes its thermal hot springs as an exclusive amenity reserved only for hotel guests, and its website does not list a day pass. To use the two thermal areas, plan on booking a room; even a standard Superior room includes access. Hotels.com lists the hot springs as open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Which Volcano Lodge rooms have a private hot spring?

Thermal Superior rooms (a king bed or two full beds) and Junior Suites have a private plunge pool of naturally heated thermal water outside the room; standard Superior rooms do not. The hotel lists 9 Thermal Superior rooms and 4 Junior Suites out of 66, and on two of the dates checked on 26 October 2026 some were gone while Superior rooms were still open. On Booking.com they appear as Superior Thermal Room and Junior Suite Room, each marked Private Pool.

How do I get to Volcano Lodge from San José or Liberia?

The hotel is in La Palma, about 7 km west of La Fortuna town. Its directions from San José follow route 1, route 702 and route 142 to La Fortuna, and from Liberia route 1 to route 142. Hotels.com estimates about 173 minutes by car from Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) and 15 to 24 minutes from La Fortuna's FON-Arenal airport. Parking is free, and the hotel offers an airport shuttle for an extra charge.

Is this Volcano Lodge Hotel & Thermal Experience review sponsored?

No. Volcano Lodge did not pay for this write-up, see it before publication, or have any say in the verdict. If we earn anything it is a commission after you buy, and it comes out of the merchant’s margin rather than your price.

How was the Volcano Lodge Hotel & Thermal Experience assessed?

By using it and by checking the claims made about it against what it actually does. Where our time with something has been limited, the review says so rather than implying more testing than happened.

What else have you reviewed in Travel & Tours?

Everything in Travel & Tours sits in the review library, where you can filter by budget and sort by rating, price or how recently it landed.

Do you update reviews after publishing?

Yes — when a product changes, when a price moves for good, or when we get something wrong. Corrections are made on the piece itself with a note saying what changed.
