Questions
What does “in today’s money” mean?
Prices rise over time, so a future balance buys less than the same amount today. The future balance is divided by (1 + inflation) for each year, which shows what it would buy at today’s prices.
How does the employer match work?
A common match is 50% of what you save, up to 6% of your salary. Saving at least up to the match limit means you don’t leave free money behind. Check your own plan’s rules.
What return should I use?
It depends on how you invest. Use a cautious figure, and try a few to see the range. Fees reduce returns, so subtract them.
Does it work for a 401(k), IRA, RRSP or super?
Yes, for projecting growth: enter your own contributions, match and return. It does not apply each account’s contribution limits or tax rules.
Are contribution limits included?
No. Retirement accounts have yearly limits that change over time, and taxes depend on the account type. Check your plan or a financial adviser.
