Questions
How is future cost calculated?
Price × (1 + rate) to the power of the number of years. $100 at 3% a year for 10 years becomes $134.39.
What is buying power?
What your money can buy. At 3% a year, $100 in 10 years buys what $74.41 buys today.
How do I find the average inflation between two prices?
Divide the later price by the earlier one, take the root for the number of years, and subtract 1. A price going from $100 to $150 over 10 years is about 4.14% a year.
Where can I find official inflation rates?
In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Other countries publish their own, usually through the national statistics office.
