Questions
How much does a smart thermostat save?
ENERGY STAR says certified smart thermostats save about 8% on heating and cooling bills. Heating and cooling are close to half of a typical home energy bill, so that is roughly 3–4% of the whole bill.
How much do LED bulbs save?
LEDs use up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs (U.S. Department of Energy). Swapping ten 60 W bulbs used 3 hours a day for 9 W LEDs saves about 560 kWh a year, close to $95 at $0.17 per kWh.
Do smart plugs save money?
A little, by cutting standby power. Berkeley Lab puts standby at 5–10% of home electricity, with about a fifth of it avoidable, so savings are small but the plugs are cheap.
