An estimate, not a loan offer or financial advice. Tax and fee rules vary by state, so check the dealer’s final figures.
How to use it
- Enter the price, down payment and any trade-in.
- Add the sales tax rate, fees, APR and term.
- Compare terms: a longer loan lowers the payment but costs more interest.
Questions
How is a car payment calculated?
The amount financed is the price, minus the down payment and trade-in equity, plus tax and fees if you roll them in. The monthly payment uses the standard amortization formula with the APR ÷ 12 as the monthly rate.
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax?
In many US states it does: tax is charged on the price minus the trade-in value. Some states tax the full price, so untick the box if yours does.
Is a longer loan a good idea?
A longer term lowers the monthly payment but you pay interest for longer, so the total cost goes up. You may also owe more than the car is worth for longer.
What is negative equity?
If you owe more on your current car than its trade-in value, the difference is usually added to the new loan. The calculator includes it in the amount financed.
